How The Pandemic Changed Social Media

The global pandemic has changed the way people live and will continue impact the economy for years to come. In the social distancing era, nearly 60% of small businesses have closed and millions of workers experienced job losses.

Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, social media shifted to normalizing less perfection and more real life. Content from leading social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram often flooded with unrealistic posts of people’s lives which sparked a greater need for human connection and positivity during quarantine.

Loneliness and social isolation contributed to the depression of many Americans during COVID-19. With fights over politics, lockdown measures, and mask-wearing all playing out on social media became an endless flood of misinformation and negativity causing confusion in communities everywhere. It was clear that there needed to be a platform built by communities, for communities to stay connected.

Getting Involved in the Community

During the pandemic, myself and the Co-founders of LocalBuzz collaborated with small businesses to introduce the LocalBuzz mobile app concept to local venues to help reach their customers through the platform. We also reached out to entrepreneurs, content creators, food vendors, and community organizations to grow the brand through word of mouth.

LocalBuzz's previous beta website had over 30,000+ visitors per week — using this data, I've analyzed user engagement and also monitored other platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to search for growth opportunities.

In 2020, the most dominate platform during qurantine was TikTok, after studying the app's interaction style I encouraged myself create a new interaction style that would change the game and help LocalBuzz stand out.

Building a Brand From Scratch

At LocalBuzz, I took full leadership on establishing the look, feel, brand identity, and redefining product vision. Our main goal was to create a positive space for users to discover community happenings around the world with an easy-to-use product interface with unique interaction patterns.

We wanted users to have a variety of options to explore and support local communities, I took full initiative to create various features such as the Buzz Button, Community Selector, Content Creation, Business Profiles. Using my creativity, I designed these core features to create a completely unique style unlike any other platform on the market.

Main In-App Features

Before I joined LocalBuzz, they hosted a beta site that eventually shutdown and there needed be a new official site in order to allow other users to view different video posts from various communities. Since there were development constraints due to lack of funding, my options were limited as to how to make the web experience more interactive. I primarily focused on integrating the mission of supporting local communities by using my visual design skills to create a warm, welcoming, and positive space for website visitors. LocalBuzz went on to released their new site on December 9th, 2020.

Launching the Website

Our goal was to create a fun and positive feel for our mobile app, I creatively came up with the 'Buzz Button", an easy-to-use component that allows users to interact with video content in a new way. By clicking the Buzz Buzz Button users will be able to share, comment, favorite, thank, and review place info instantly.

The Buzz Button

To align development teams, there needed to be a single source of true for LocalBuzz's branding guidelines. I created a foundational style guide for future employees to follow for brand consistency.

Challenges

Since there were many development constraints, I needed to create an easy simple prototype that would allow developers to ship the product to the market quickly to compete with our competitors.

Core Responsibilities

•  Build mobile and web UI screens to release to the market and compete with competitors.

•  Establish platform identity through lo-fi and hi-fidelity deliverables such as user flows, wireframes, style guide, UI & motion animations.

•   Worked directly with the co-founders to define and align business goals, product goals, and user goals.

Iterating the core experience of the platform included not requiring users to sign-up. This proved to be crucial in increasing user engagement. Since we needed to ship quickly, I lead the process for creating an app experience unlike any other platform with comprehensive feedback from the founders.

Wireframing

I carefully mapped out every single step that users would take while using with the app and identified how the core interaction elements would enhance the user's experience.
