01  •  Introduction

Providing biometric authentication methods on the Sezzle App

Biometrics is a functionality that requires devices to rely on physical characteristics such as a fingerprint, facial patterns, or iris or retinal patterns to verify user identity. Established as an effective way to verify a user’s identity which can be harder to fake, replicate or transfer than the traditional username and password (U / P) login authentication.

Due to the pandemic, millions of Americans have shifted their daily workplace and shopping to remote online networks and mobile devices. A new wave of cyber threats has emerged from the economic crisis focusing on targeting banks, e-commerce and other daily financial activities.

Evidence of an increase in cybercrime & mobile fraud across the globe

Creating biometrics for Touch ID / Face ID login for iOS & Android devices on the Sezzle App to improve security and prevent fraud. Relying on physical characteristics such as a fingerprint, facial patterns, or iris or retinal patterns to verify user identity providing better security for all Sezzle user accounts.

Envisioning a more secure sign-in method to bypass U / P login

Partnering with developers, engineers, and product managers helped better understand how to leverage existing device ecosystems to integrate biometric authentication for users on the Sezzle App. Studying both the Study Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for iOS and the Study Material Design Guidelines for Android to develop a framework for understanding developer requirements and technical constraints.

Multiple user flows were created to document use cases for new, existing, and returning users of the Sezzle App. For biometrics to be implemented across all users, specific biometrics can only be integrated in certain areas of the app.

By consulting with cross-functional teams on various designs that were reviewed for approval, I've worked with project managers on crafting production timelines to ensure our Q1  /  Q2 product goals are met along with meeting our deadline. There was heavy emphasis on creating error states within the Apple ecosystem.

03  •  Sezzle Up

Project Background

Sezzle Up is an feature that allows Sezzle customers to opt-in to report their payment history to credit bureaus. By making payments on time, this allows users to boost their credit score! In order for users to upgrade to Sezzle Up they must link bank their account, pay off one order, and verify account information.

Older Sezzle Experience

In order to improve the shopping experience for pet parents, I added a sticky CTA in the product view to allows consumers to purchase anytime while browsing products on the store.

In additon, added new ux patterns and products to the homepage to provide more options for first site visitors.

Core Project

Stakeholders and product teams saw an opportunity for the Wisdom Panel product to enter the social media market. I was tasked with building Pet Profiles for pet owners looking to share their pet's DNA results across the globe.

Final Thoughts

Working at a small start-up company was challenging from the constraints on all sides. In my role as an intern, I took full leadership to drive the direction of the Wisdom Panel product and their Digital Design Systems.

Being in a small team with little to no mentorship pushed me to take initiative, ask questions, and deliver work within a short deadline. My work assisted the company in developing their brand identity and scaling the company into a brand new market.

Sezzle's new biometric system has been implemented across iOS and Android devices on the Sezzle App. Biometric login is also included within the Shopper Support page on Sezzle.com for users that need to access their accounts.
